Western Sanātana Dharma

The Western Sanātana Dharma blog

Thanks to the commenter ‘S’ for pointing out this new blog to me.

This blog is by Alicia, a high-school student in New York State. Her blog is relatively new and she describes her first steps in Sanatana Dharma. She appears to have an affinity with Ma Durga and Shri Ganesha. I wish her well with her spiritual path, and I have added the blog to my page of blogs by Westerners Following Hinduism.

Also on the same page I have linked the entry for “Adorations to Amma” to Stacey’s Flicr profile. Her myspace blog has been flagged inactive for a while and I think she has moved on from this. Her photostream is  highly individual and forms a visual act of guru-puja. She is obviously very visually orientated and this is really different from most other blogs.

A page for other Western Hindus

There are Westerners following sampradayas in the Saiva, Shakti, Vaishnava, Smarta, and Neo-Hindu sects.

I have come across a number of blogs by other Western followers of Hinduism, and I thought that putting a page listing them by sect would be a useful resource. I chose a page rather than a post because I see this as something that will develop over time rather than a journal entry. The page can be accessed by the “Westerners Following Hinduism” tab below the header image.

Blog title change, but to what?

I have decided that I need to change my blog title from “Westerner interested in Hinduism”. I am more than just interested in Hinduism now, I am a follower of Sanatana Dharma. I have to say a follower at the beginning stages, and perhaps not a very good one. But what should I change it to? Well, it should reflect that I am ethnically Western, and that I am following Hinduism. The obvious title is “Western Hindu”, and that is actually the title that I have decided to use.

Why have I bothered to write this article then? Because there are very good arguments that the title “Western Hindu” is not accurate and some would argue incorrect. This article explores the alternative titles that I have considered, and why I have chosen a title that is not the most accurate. I will start by looking at why the term “Western” is could be misleading, and then look at why some people would claim that my use of the word “Hindu” is wrong.

Why Hinduism is the "Eternal way", the true religion.

Hinduism is more correctly referred to as sanatana dharma, which can be translated as the eternal way or the eternal law.  In this post I hope to demonstrate that Hinduism can claim to be the eternal way, a claim that other religions cannot make. I will also show why Hinduism is the true religion.

First of all I need to define what I mean by the true religion. I do not define true religion to mean the only path, or means to spiritual realisation (moksha, enlightenment or heaven). By that definition Hinduism is not “the true religion”, there is no one true religion in that sense, people can reach enlightenment on other paths. What I mean by true religion is that Hinduism gives the clearest path, with methods and instructions for finding God,  and that all that is valid in other religions can be found in Hinduism.
